Our Cooperative Roots

Our cooperative identity reaches back to the late 19th century when a group of farmers founded the first agricultural cooperative banks to provide credit for their members. Our strong agricultural roots mean that we have unparalleled knowledge in the Food & Agri industry. We are by far the largest bank in the Netherlands in this field and our ambition is to become the world’s leading Food & Agri bank. Building on this ambition, we are dedicated to making a contribution to bringing about global food safety and security.

These cooperative roots and the philosophy of cooperation underpinning it have remained our guiding principles throughout more than 115 years of business.

Active internationally

The group's first international activities begin in the early 1980’s, initially for clients doing business internationally. The growth and expansion of the 1980’s saw the bank opening offices in major financial centres and taking over retail banks in agricultural areas. One of those international branches is the German office, located in Frankfurt am Main, which was opened in 1984. In 2002, Rabobank launched International Direct Banking (IDB), to tap into the new opportunities offered by the iInternet offers for savings and banking services.

Big in food & agri

We have developed from a purely Dutch bank into an international financial services provider for our customers. Today, our international clients are still our core business and our network spans the world. However, we still focus primarily on the Food & Agri business where we had our beginnings and where our vast experience provides the greatest added value. This is what has enabled us to grow into an international leader in this sector.

Rabobank wants to be part of building a better living and working environment for and with its customers. Our prime mission is to help achieve our customers' ambitions. We also feel a sense of shared responsibility for our customers' growth. Rabobank is a bank by and for customers, a cooperative bank, a socially-responsible bank.
